Ana Sluga: Passive Torso

Works on paper

Pop-up one-day exhibition

Admission free.

With the cycle of one-day events From the Studios, we introduce resident artists working at MGLC Švicarija. Painter, photographer and video artist Ana Sluga presents herself with her latest production of paintings. The series of works on paper entitled Passive Torso explores the medium of painting and the atmosphere built up by the artist and her reactions as the viewer.

The pictorial field of the works on paper Passive Torso is like a mirror surface. It reflects painterly portraits of female figures characterised by formal rigour (a considered choice of shapes, lines, colours, compositions and patterns) and a narrative of identification and identity open to interpretation. The female figures depicted in different situations are (for the artist) a reminiscence of unconscious moments from the past, small fascinations about a reawakened smell, taste, colour or feeling – all these are the static torsos in the dynamic situations of today.

Ana Sluga was born in Ljubljana in 1981. In 2004, she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (ALUO) in Ljubljana. She completed her master's degree in Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana and the Estonian Academy of Arts (Eesti Kunstiakadeemia) in Tallinn. In 2015, she received the Award for Significant Artworks from the University of Ljubljana. Since 2007, she has been working as a freelance artist, taking part in solo and selected exhibitions in the national and international cultural arena.
