This December, the International Centre of Graphic Arts and Menažerija present the largest Art Advent Calendar in Slovenia. The exhibition Menažerija: 37 Days of Christmas at Tivoli Mansion was conceived as a large Advent calendar with artworks by the Menažerija art brand, presented to the public in succession from 1 December to Christmas, 24 December. Every day a new art piece was unwrapped and exhibited at MGLC and presented on social media. The unwrapped exhibition with all the works was on show from 25 December 2020 to 6 January 2021, Epiphany, when, as is traditional for putting away the Christmas tree at home, the exhibition at Tivoli Mansion also comes to a close and is tidied up.

It was able to experience a selection of Menažerija’s hits as well as never-before-seen works. More than half of them are art pieces made especially for this exhibition. The collection 12 Art Prints in the exhibition was created in the MGLC Print Studios.

Prize Winning Game

6. 12.–24. 12. 2020

This December, the International Centre of Graphic Arts and Menažerija invite you to take part in a fun prize winning game with a top catch! This is what you need to do. The print, which is entitled Horrid Frame and is part of Menažerija's collection 12 Art Prints, and which was created in the MGLC Print Studios as part of the exhibition Menažerija: 37 Days of Christmas, will need to be placed into the most horrifyingly horrid frame possible. The prize winning game starts on 6 December, when the print is posted on the MGLC website and social networks. Your job is to download it to your computer and add what you consider to be the ugliest, most tasteless, non-frame to it, using either digital or analogue means. Send us your masterpiece up till 24 December 2020 in the form of a jpg file to the following e-mail address: press@mglc-lj.si. On 1 January, the author of the exhibition, Iris Pokovec will choose the arguably ugliest frame from the works submitted, and the winner will receive one of the signed and stamped screen prints from Menažerija's collection 12 Art Prints!

This is actually one of the more amusing prize-winning games!

And enjoy the festivities!

Piece For The Living Room, 2017

The work Piece For The Living Room is part of Menažerija's Site Specifics collection.

As the name suggests, the work is ideal for any living room. In fact, it’s made particularly for those people who "would like to have a picture behind the sofa in the living room. So it matches with the curtains!" Thanks to its minimalist look, black and white colour and smaller format, you can easily combine the piece with the rest of the furniture in the living room, and it will most definitely make a great topic of conversation for visitors.

50% Off Painting, 2019

50% Off Painting is part of Menažerija's $¥ƜβÖŁ$ collection.

In our work as painters, we use motifs and themes that interest us. Motifs that we think are worth portraying. Sometimes even motifs that we think the public would like. And honesty is important here.

Art has always been a reflection of time and society. And the motif we like to see today is a discount sign.

50% Off Painting is a work of art that depicts and glorifies the idea of discount. And because it is true to what its motif promises, it is also a work that – regardless of its price – is and always will be reduced by 50 per cent.

Christmas Pickle, 2020

Christmas Pickle is part of Menažerija's Christmas Art collection.

The tradition of the Christmas pickle decoration is said to come from Germany, where it is hidden on the Christmas tree amid other decorations. The child who finds it first receives an additional gift that year.

Menažerija's adaptation of the pickle-shaped decoration is a Christmas pop curiosity, which places the whole idea of the pickle as a Christmas decoration (probably most unusual and exotic to us) under a glass bell jar so that the mysterious specimen can be observed more closely.

The work Christmas Pickle is available in the MGLC Shop.

Antidepressive Painting, 2019

Antidepressive Painting is part of Menažerija's Site Specifics collection and is a smiling image that can be interpreted in two ways: you can take it as a yellow and cheerful fun picture that brightens up your days and radiates vitamin D, or you can see it as a depiction of a plastic and hollow smile that occurs as a side effect of antidepressant therapy.

Nose Fondler, 2020

Nose Fondler is part of Menažerija's Curiosities collection and a prototype of a trendy accessory for the thorough and efficient fondling of your nose. It is a conditionally useful work of art that allows you to pick your nose in a much more prestigious and regal manner.

*COVID-19 warning*

Nose Fondler was created as a prototype before the COVID-19 pandemic and was already at that time intended as a fun curiosity and not as a real nose fondler.

In accordance with the above, I most definitely and absolutely dissuade you from using it to discover its nasal fondling functions at this time.

The Nose Fondler piece is available in the MGLC Shop.

Yellow Snow, 2020

Yellow Snow is a painting that is part of Menažerija’s Christmas Art collection. Since we all know what yellow snow is, I probably don't need to go into detail about it. All I can say is that the starting point for this work was the moment of every winter when you look out of the window and see the snow falling for the first time, and it’s just such a magical and special moment – until you venture into this winter idyll and find that the beautiful white blanket of snow has already been desecrated in some places and has become ... yellow snow. The work is a humorous reminder that things are always different when we observe them from a distance than when we see them up close. And romanticising always happens from a distance.

Cosmic Vibrations and Other Stuff That I Don't Want, 2020

Cosmic Vibrations and Other Stuff That I Don't Want is part of Menažerija’s collection 12 Art Prints and politely asks the people nearby to keep their cosmic vibrations to themselves.

For special effects, I suggest that you read the inscription on the print in your mind in the most cynical, slightly singsongy voice possible and wave your arms about at the same time.

The work Cosmic Vibrations and Other Stuff That I Don't Want is available in the MGLC Shop.

Ugly Christmas Sweater, 2019

Ugly Christmas Sweater is a festive sweater created in collaboration with the fashion designer Jan Brovč who also creates under his own self-named label. The idea and aim of the collaboration was to join forces and produce one of those – infamously tasteless and sad would-be fashion hits overloaded with festive motifs – sweaters.

Ugly Christmas sweaters started appearing abroad (then still unaware of their fate) in humorous series at some point in the 80s, wanting to be fashionable, festive items of clothing. But even back then, they were met with sceptical reactions, while the taste of those who wore them became an enigmatic mystery to many. And when the cheerful fussy sweaters seemed to have fallen into oblivion, they were about a decade ago reinterpreted as a camp ode to the aesthetics of ugliness and became enormously popular during the holidays and a central theme of many Christmas celebrations and charities, with the trend of ugly Christmas sweaters spreading around the world. Ugly Sweater Day is even commemorated and celebrated in many countries on every third Friday of December, which this year falls on 18 December.

The print I Made This, It's Beautiful, But It Doesn't Mean Shit is part of Menažerija's collection 12 Art Prints and criticizes the still established opinion of a certain type of audience that only beautiful art is good art and that it doesn't have to mean anything.
